Chinese New Year

We went to Chinatown in Den Haag today. After a lovely brunch we watched the Chinese New Year celebrations. Nila and I fallen madly in love with the cute lions. The white one was my favorite.

The opening and the following parade tell the story about the lion waking up at the end of the year. He is hungry and starts looking for food.

Everybody hangs a lettuce plant above the front door for the lion to eat. This will please the lion and brings the people good luck and prosperity in the coming year.

So the lions go through every street eating the lettuce. It's a very colorful festival with drums and lots of fireworks.

I keep bringing home this kind of soft colored vases, some of them are vintage but most of them are not older then 10 years. They just look so pretty in a group or with spring flowers. Tell me which combination you like most. For me it's photo number 3.

- Been talking to my girlfriends today to join or start a vintage Bake Club. Swapping recipes and trying new cakes. I really like the idea.

At the moment my garden looks more like a wet fairy garden. But soon it will be time to start some pruning and I still have to order tomato seeds .

Just made a list of things I spent all my spare money on:

- Travel = weekend trips, summer holidays , day trips

- Books and music = I still buy Cd's and lots of books (I just love to read)

- Vintage = is also a future investment and a big passion

- Art = prints from etsy and tinyshowcase

- Sports & Gym = membership and sneakers. I sport 5 day in a week. That means I start to have a collection of sneakers (running shoes, Gym sneakers). I should look for a sponsor who sends me free sneakers to try out (dream on).

Amsterdam was busy today but also pretty

Everywhere in town you can get Oliebollen and Appelbeignets (dutch apple fritters),

sweets snacks that are traditionally eaten in the Netherlands on New Years Eve.

All we needed today was a nice little walk in town today .

Amsterdam is a fantastic place to walk.

Father Christmas has been good to us. I love the days between Christmas and New Year. They are quiet & cozy. Still lots of special food in the house. Great time to potter around the house and to find a good place for our new vintage goodies, books and cds.

Here we go: My Tannenbaum (just love that word).

A couple of years ago I started to collect

little birds aka Christmas ornaments.

My idea was to have one day

a Christmas tree full of birds and elfs (for Nila).

It will take some time but I tell you we are getting there.

The next couple of days are just mad,

full of Christmas parties,

food shopping,

swapping Christmas cards

and some last minute baking.

Christmas dessert

This will be our Christmas dessert this year. I found the

recipe in a Dutch magazine. So easy & fast.

You need:

250 ml of whipped cream

75 g sugar

250 ml of Quark

a glass of cherries

and some Bastogne cookies

(sure you can make it also with different cookies)

Whip the cream.

Crumble the cookies.

Drain the cherries.

Carefully mix all ingredients.

Serve cold with an extra cookie on the side.

Looks great if served in vintage teacups!

Our home looks cozy , I really enjoy working at home. If you turn on the radio there is some beautiful Christmas music playing all day... only two more weeks to go.

This year I will only send a few Christmas cards but I did send out some nice parcels via snail mail.

Here is my Christmas wishing list:

socks (just love winter socks).
camera (I really do need a new one... but still not sure what I want, guess I should wait.
fancy bag from Oral Kiely or Cathy but then what I really need is a sports bag a la Adidas.
sports clothes (I could buy them myself).
books... always good.
DVD box set (for the long winter nights).
coffee beans, love to try new coffee.
wanted one of those new phones but then I love my pink vintage handy.
yankee candles... lots of them, love them with a touch of vanilla.
music, CDs... like the new one from Amy Winehouse.

Countdown... we had a cozy blue second Advent coffee.

Having a lot of fun with my table decorations this year... I got some angels from Rie Elise Larsen. She is my fav paper artist. Also I was in the mood for some shiny red coffee mugs (from the Hema). The rest is vintage.

Tomorrow night we will celebrate Sinterklaas here in the Netherlands.

Like Elvis Presley and James Dean my dad wore the Pompadour. So I was delighted when I got Rock 'n' Hair, a great book about vintage hairstyles for everyday.

I have been struggling to maintain my rockabilly look on a daily base but in the book are some great & easy step-by-step instructions (nice Christmas gift).

Moravian (Herrnhuter) star

About five years ago we got a white Moravian (Herrnhuter) star made of paper. It is hanging in our living room all year round. At the Christmas market in Dusseldorf there was a Herrnhuter stand. I wanted a white plastic star for our front door for a long time... so now you know what Mister Kay will do this weekend.

Christmas mood

After my trip to the Christmas market last weekend I'm totally in the christmas mood. My living room looks like a Christmas elf workshop. Yesterday I did get some gifts from the local shops for my family & friends in the USA and UK.

I also made a trip to the garden center to get some more winter berries, mistletoe and candles. In the next couple of days we got some december highlights coming...

- this friday a christmas party with my bookclub (always good)
- 5.12 Sinterklaas (dutch Christmas)
- 6.12 we are putting up our christmas tree

I always put on a few kilos at Christmas time. I just love german marzipan & pepermint bark. This year I will take some extra spinning classes in the next couple of weeks so I can eat and still look good (hahaha)

Design Börse Düsseldorf 2011

There was so much to see at the Design Börse last weekend in Düsseldorf. Every design icon you ever dreamed of was there and much more... It was fun to see that mister kay and I still have the same taste.

I fell in love with the white ceramic star vase (guess I was in a Christmas mood).

There where so many cool lamps, like the Grasshopper by Greta Grossman and the Artichoke by Poul Henningsen.

Midcentrury magazine

The second issue of Midcentury magazine is out. You can see that they put a lot of work in it. They came up with a great second issue with lots of information on vintage living and some great house tours. And I love the cover.

So if you only buy one magazine this month... I would go for this one.

Also I got the new cd from Lianne La Havas today. I saw her at Jools Hollands (my friday night tv moment) in October. So I will take Lianne with me to Duesseldorf.

I had the idea to start my christmas shopping early this year. So I could enjoy the rest of december going to christmas parties and have nice coffee moments with my friends (stress free).
Oh that sounds good!

Did get a couple of gifts for my friends. My idea was to make a small art wall in Nilas room. So I got her cat girl last week and I bought masked kitty a couple of months ago.

Also I noticed that christmas shopping is to much temptation for me. I keep buying things for myself.

We got some nice plans for the coming weekend.

Finally we will go to the Design Boerse in Duesseldorf.

lucky because the christmas market saison is also

Look at my wonderful new paper star.

When I saw this one in a shop window in Haarlem on Friday, I knew right away I wanted it. Now it is hanging in my living room and it makes me happy looking at it.

Our movie this weekend was Trollhunters( Trolljegere). I wasn't sure what to expect but I really liked it!
I'm currently listening to Martha and the Vandellas
Looking for some vintage Fantomette books, not easy to find in this part of the world.

My favourite spot in there home is the dinning room. The dark walls and the chandelier are just amazing.

I did have the idea to change my hall for some time now. Finally last weekend we bought this vintage coat rack. I'm very happy with it.

I also got some wall paint 'jasmine leaf'. Now you know what I will be doing next weekend.

Vintage Bird

At the moment we are still living in a home without 'wallpaper' but I really want to change that. When I was a kid my parents let me choose my own wallpaper for my room and I tell you I did have a very different (weird) taste in those days, lol.

In the last two years I have seen some fantastic wallpaper in shops, magazines and blogs. Vintage Bird in Hastings has a great collecting and they also do mailorder.

Now I wonder do you have wallpaper in your home ?? And if yes, what kind of ?

the new Marks & Spencer Christmas tins

The Marks & Spencer design team did it again.

I was so curious what kind of Christmas cookie tins they will bring out in 2011. After I missed the Sanna Anukka tins last Christmas I made sure I went there in time this year. Mister kay was thinking I was mad buying 6 tins in one go! I call them Antiques of the future but they also make fabulous Christmas gifts.

My favourite is the woodland tin (I just love foxes). That one is designed by Isak.

The bus is also great. I love the vintage look. It reminds me of mister Sasek's work.

Lap partners made the telephone booth tin.

Halloween weekend

Trick-or-treating... happy halloween weekend. You love it or you hate it. We saw these Holeween pictures in Hastings last week.

We where in Dover last weekend. It's great fun to go to Dover Castel around Halloween time.

Martha Stewart always has some great Pumpkin carving and Halloween decorating ideas.
We still have to do some carving this weekend, I'm sure Mister Kay will be very good in that.

Meggs store Bells Bicycles in Hastings is different.

It is very pretty, full of vintage, cool chandeliere, carpet and art

(that sounds more like my home than like a bicyle store, lol)

I have been looking for a new bicycle for a while now...

guess I would love a 70's chopper.

Travel on Paper

It's not easy to find vintage travelposters, so I was delighted that Travel on Paper had a pop-up shop in Whitstable Harbourstreet this weekend. We really liked the Berlin poster.

Our time in the Uk went so fast this time, next time we will stay two weeks again... so I can spent more time with my friends.

On Tuesday I was lucky to find this midmodern clock in a small shop in Leiden. Mister Kay found another 50's Hala lamp... so we had a good day.

Our last weekend was really fun. Saturday we spent all day at the municipal museum in Den Haag. On Sunday we went to the Kunstroute (Art Trail) in Leiden.

We have met lots of friendly artists & seen some wonderful art (guess I should buy a bigger house with lots of white walls). Sure we will go there again next year.

In a couple of weeks we will visit the open house trail in Whistable, Kent. So maybe I'll see you there.

Here are some photos from Cafe Voltaire in DenBosch. This is the place where my love & collection of pastel dinnerware started. (I wonder why??) The owner Ria has a huge collection of pastel plates & cups.

We had a great day at the Gemeente Museum in Den Haag today. It was the opening of the Mondriaan & de Stijl exhibition. I love that museum, the staff there are so friendly and today there where so many pretty people. They also have a great museum shop.

As you can see in the first photo Mister Kay was also having a good time. After a couple of hours at the museum, we went for a little beach walk in Scheveningen. What a beautiful day.

Hello Kitty & giveaway

Last weekend the SieboldHuis in Leiden started their Hello Kitty exhibition. Very colorful and cute. I really liked the vintage Hello Kitty clothes. You have to enlarge the third picture to see the Hello Kitty figures in the pattern of that great suit. It's on till the 20th of November.

At the Museum shop you can buy some special editon Hello Kitty goodies... so I got one Hello Kitty mug (see last photo) for one of my readers. Just leave me a comment before the 30th of September.

Mister Kay's fav dinner plate is made by Egersund -Norway.

It's a shame that we don't have any more information on the plate,

but I guess is from the 50's.

My fav plate is from the Picknick range by Rorstrand - Sweden.

It was designed by Marianne Westmann in the 50's.

In Berlin we bought some Picknick fabric from Scandinavian Objects. Maybe I should ask my friend Zoe to make me some Picknick pillows when I'm in the UK in October.

As you can see I'm bringing back the color blue to my home.

Wat a glorious day we had yesterday. Most of the day we spent outside.

We started with a trip to a small local flea market. I found some nice tins. The rest of the day we spent in the garden. We also had dinner in the garden. I missed our meals outside this year.

At the second photo you see my fav plant Chocolate Mint. It smells just like After Eight.

Inaluxe and Helen Dardik designed some great paper lanters for BlueQ. They are so cool, I want one!

A couple of weeks ago in Brussels I met two sisters from Madrid in front of a second hand clothing shop. They where great fun and, as you can see in the pictures, very proud of their vintage finds. You know the quote "strangers are friends you have yet to meet". Lets hope I'll meet them again one day.

New print in the house.

This morning we got our The Enlightened Fireflies Print from John W Golden who has done work for Target and was also featured at Southern Living Magazine. For me this is the perfect after summer print (keeping my summer memories in a jar).

- Oh comely, what a great mag. I think I want that one in my letterbox. Will keep me going on cold winter days.

Mauerpark Berlin

Another big flea market in Berlin is in Mauerpark. This is where the Berlin wall between Prenzlauerberg and Wedding used to be. The market is huge and you can also find a lot of artists here who sell their work.

The market is very busy with a lot of tourists but I didn't find much vintage on offer. People told me it has been different in the past.

This morning we made a trip to the market to buy veggies for our weekend soup. My friend Kumiko is giving me japanese cooking lessons... I tell you more about it soon!

At the moment our weekdays are really busy and on the weekend I'm tired. So it's wonderful to start the morning with a long family breakfast but I tell you it's not always easy to wake up Mister kay!!

You can find the big golden turtle in Amsterdam Zuid. It's a sculpture of Jan Fabre called ‘Searching for Utopia’.

This morning at the yoga class, I wish I had started yoga many years ago. It is a perfect way to grow old graceful & happy.

There is a new book out from Angel Adoree which is called The Vintage Tea Party book.

First I love Angels hair but also I'm crazy about vintage & baking. So the perfect book for me. Also it would be cool to have a vintage tea party in my garden with girlfriends or with my bookclub. I could make some Lemon Scones with Lavender Cream and some Plum & Honey tea bread... yummy!

Plastic Fantasic.

If orange is your fav color or if you love plastic there is still time to go to Kiel to see 'Plastic World' in the Stadtmuseum. The exhibition is on till the 11th of September.

They have a geat exhibition poster too. Maybe stupid of me not to buy it but I bought the book instead.

50s vases

My favorite decade is the 50s. I love the music, clothes and homeware (kitchen goodies) from the 50s.
Most of the ceramic vases from the 50s era are just stunning , they look so elegant and I love the shapes.

The fist week after the big summer holidays is always difficult and I'm also coping with my post vacation depression (how Teri called it) but our first days have been nice. Ok, getting up at 6:30 is not easy but it's nice to see all our expat friends being back in the Netherlands. Also I have been back to the gym and tomorrow my Yoga class is starting again...

-we got great news from the States (more soon)
- just got a copy from Midcentury Magazine (new cool british mag)
- my heaven this week a Bibou massage & facial
- watch The great british bake off if you can ( it's baking time, let's try my new pink mixer)
- Pan Am, I'm sure I will love it, looks so good

Hamburg

A day in Hamburg on the way back from Berlin to Amsterdam.

A perfect day in the Zoo - Hagenbeck Tierpark.

Super cool was that my mum has a friend there working with the elephants.

Afterwards coffee with the girlfriends. One of them is paper artist Monika Bistram.

Then some turkish food at Arkadasch. One of the most friendly waitresses I have ever met is working there. Lovely lady.
