hay,sugar and carrots



in the Netherlands Christmas starts at the 5th of december, which is called Sinterklaas Avond. There is a festiv dinner and children receive presents in their shoes




Sinterklaas also has a helper Black Pete, who slides down chimneys to fill the
shoes that children leave by the fireplace with small gifts.Children in the NL
leave their shoes filled with hay, sugar and carrots for the Sinterklaas horse

My mother was born in Holland (she's half Dutch, half French) and the old traditions still light a spark in my heart. I am celebrating today by decorating the tree with my daughter!

we are having nikolaus tomorrow here in germany... used to be so exciting when i was little and we put our boots out the night before to find sweets in them the next morning!

{the shoes tradition sounds very similar to a puerto rican ritual, celebrating tres reyes/three kings (january 6th)}

Sinterclaas' in Holland look a whole lot more authentic than the current ring-in Santa Claus imposters around here! I'm having to make up all manner of cover stories.
